Recently I experienced entering Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. I had tested whitening products and received a first place award.  For the some of you that don’t know what PJAS is, it is a type of science competition in which you do a science experiment and then present a power point presentation on it in front of judges at CalU.  Usually  only 7th & 8th graders enter from St. Sebastian.  The Regional compition is at California University of Pennsylvania, and States is at Penn State University.  This event teaches you how to present/talk in front of a crowd which you will need to know for future educational events.  We do this to learn many things and this event does teach you many things including: how to conduct experiments. The Regional Competition is usually in late February and States is in the middle of May.

The topics you will need in the PowerPoint are:

  • Justification-why you did the certain experiment that you did
  • Hypothesis – what you think the result will be of the experiment
  • Materials List – a list of all the items you used
  • Procedure – tells the step by step procedure you used to conduct your project
  • Vocabulary – includes the definitions of the words you will need to know to understand your experiment
  • Research –  plane research about details and facts that are about your projects
  • Did you know – fun facts about the topic of your project
  • Conclusion – whether your hypothesis was correct or incorrect
  • Further Research – tells the Judges what you would do again and if you made any mistakes

I would like to thank Mr. Domiano & Mrs.Gigliotti for helping me with my project and giving me their advice on how to improve my project.  I would also like to thank Mrs. Stockey for staying after school with me to let me practice with her and for helping me the same way the other two teachers did. All teachers were much appreciated!
